Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
1) Since we completed our first preliminary task, we decided some aspects were capable of replicating in our final opening due to there level of success. The left column reflects the shots of the preliminary task in comparison to the film opening shots on the right. comparison 1 shows our use of a panning shot which we felt went particularly well in both to emphasize the speed at which the characters are moving. In the preliminary task, a fast pan showed her rushed gait whilst a slower pan in the opening highlighted Jack's worn and injured body.
2)Shot 2 refers to the diegetic sound which we placed over the footage. Both of these shots begin their film and sets the general plot of the continuing film. The clock represents time passing whilst the sirens foreshadow the crime theme within the film.
3) Much like the 1st comparison , shot 3 is used to imply a characteristic from the main character. The feet in the first task indicated that the character was running and in a rush as she sprinted up the steps. Jack has a slight bounce in his step which suggests his relaxed attitude and perhaps fun loving behaviour. The over the shoulder shot was not believable in the preliminary task and would have been changed to a POV shot instead, however the final task gave us the opportunity to re-do this shot with accuracy.
4) The 4th comparison shows an over the shoulder shot from both films. We feel this was effective as , in the case of Jack's situation, we are able to see his gestures through the mirror. The comedic part of it all is that he practicing in the mirror instead of in front of an actual human, this would be lost in a close up front view of them.
In both of these tasks we tried our hardest to ensure the continuity was precise throughout. I feel that we did this to the best of our ability, on the other hand we acknowledge that some errors slipped through to our final cuts which were very difficult to replace.
From the preliminary task , i have learnt about the 180 degree which allowed us to film footage that did not differ in angles that would obscure it. The shot reverve shot was difficult to get to grips with. The reason for this was that the two shots that were the same had to have the same continuity, meaning no one could touch the set once filming had began. This process can be found in the shot of our preliminary task below.
Match on action or Cutting on action is used in both to convey the characters fast pace actions. In our film opening for example Jack is seen getting dressed through multiple jump cuts. He is also shown getting ingredients out then proceeding to make and eat his breakfast. Overall , i personally have learnt a lot about the process of filming and how to overcome its difficulties. All of the techniques I have learnt can be applied to most, if not all films as shown in the comparison between the two tasks.
